Illustrator/Expressive Space
Negative space is an important consideration in all aspects of graphic design. Search through magazines or the internet and identify photographs that contain interesting negative space. Observe the positive space for shapes that could add interest to the overall composition. Select a minimum of three good options to consider for a final composition. If image is from a magazine, scan at 300 dpi. If the image is from the internet, make sure it is large enough to work with. Make a final selection and create an expressive composition by defining and emphasizing the negative space in the photograph. Include positive shapes as part of the composition. Make the negative space black so that it becomes the positive space in the composition. Crop the final composition to achieve maximum interest and impact.
